Some few months ago, it became the talk of the town in Benin City Edo
state Nigeria that a young guy has produced an aircraft. The boy was
shown on television as he made the little aircraft (a prototype) to fly
around. Some years ago, I had also watched on TV a guy who claimed to
have developed a jet engine which he claimed will fly faster than the
normal jet. As I watched the recent guy demonstrate his innovation, I
began to think of the fame and respect that this would bring to the
country. But I paused in the midst of my thoughts to wonder about his
innovation. Does he have the software to back up his hardware? What if
he is only able to develop the hardware then where are the geeks?
Where are the geeks that are suppose to develop software applications
that will help to drive the technology, agriculture, media, security,
medical, pharmaceutical industries etc? Does Africa truly have software
developers (not mediocre and script pirate) that will work with the
hardware engineers to invent and innovate products that will take Africa
to the place that God has ordained for us? After doing a little
research on the internet and through books, I discovered that there are
financial institutions e.g. banks, venture capital firms etc that have
the passion and finance to finance those products but most of those
engineers are only good in hardware but less in software.
As a young
would be investor, (don’t doubt me) I would want to invest in ideas
that can be produced 100% in Nigeria and not a product that will require
us to import a part or two. The economy of Africa requires all aspect
of professionals but most especially geeks (software developers). So my
question is where are the geeks?
