AFRICA, THE LAND OF MILK AND EXCUSES

"Maturity is the ability to take and accept responsibility despite the cause"
Some few years ago, while watching a security programme on television (crime watch), i began to think about the various confessions that i heard from some of the suspected criminals interviewed. One word that always strikes me is "it was the work of the devil". A lot of people will argue that there is nothing like devil, and that man is the god and the devil of his life. But when some of these people are caught in one crime or the other, they begin to blame it on the devil who they believe doesn't exist. A one time popular criminal was caught in Nigeria and he blamed his mother for not asking him where he got the money that he was spending around.

Africa is so blessed with both natural and human resources but the problem is that people will always give all manner of excuses for their inability to think out ways to legally partake of the milk and honey. Some blame the government of their country for their poverty and woes, while some blame it on their parents, uncles and even siblings for not giving them the right education. A lot of Africans love to play smart by looking for someone or something to put the blames on. Why can't we take responsibility for our lives and accept responsibilities for our decisions and actions. Some years ago, i watched on television a guy who claimed to be a graduate of agriculture blaming the government of Nigeria for his inability to get a job after graduation thereby making him to end up as a motorcycle rider.
Some even blame it on the power sector, some others blame their lecturers, some blame their poverty on the lack of adequate transportation system while some even blame the church for not teaching them spiritual principles for prosperous living. A guy became an atheist because he blamed Jesus Christ for not healing his mother of her sickness. While growing up as a lad, i used to blame my dad for my woes i thought he was wicked and not being supportive, so i vowed not to take good care of him in his old age (but i have changed my mind). But as i began to grow in knowledge, i discovered that nobody is responsible for my life and success, and that i am whatsoever i want to become in life. As i discovered my vision for living, i found out that my vision is bigger than my country, so why should i put my life on a country that my vision is bigger than.

Nobody caused our pains, nobody caused your unemployment and poverty, you are going to be whosoever you think of becoming. So, lets stop putting our lives on mortal men/women or government. Lets learn to take and accept responsibility for our lives and actions. Whether you die poor or rich, it is your fault and not the fault of anyone.

NO TIME

"If you think that there is still time to waste away, then ask those in the grave because that was what they thought" - John Uwangue

I have had this topic on my mind for some time now, and everytime i try to sit down to write the body of the article, i don't always feel inspired, but not until now. I Just lost a friend, a colleague, and a brother. This gave me the opportunity to think about life itself, after hearing the news about his death, a lot of people began to say different things about life. Some said that everything about this world is vanity, some said that there is nothing to work for because at the end one will still die, some said that the world is a wicked place and only the wicked will survive, some said that life is too short to plan and worry about so, one should just spend any money that comes their way. Despite the fact that we all live by different life principles and operate on different levels of knowledge, i still believe that the world is not a wicked place but the heart of man is.
I have lost a friend, a friend that couldn't say goodbye before leaving, a friend with great potentials, a friend that his parents and community have placed all their hopes on and a friend that is worth writing about. A lot of people still believe that there is still enough time to waste on irrelevant things, they believe that the youthful days should be used to have fun so that one can tell the story when one is old. Why have fun now when there are children to rescue from off the streets, why have fun now when you could sleep off and not wake up, why have fun now when the rate of poverty and unemployment is increasing by the day, why have fun now when there are still street urchins to be rescued, why have fun now when your parents and siblings are busy waiting for you to rescue them financially, why have fun now when the world is crying for a messiah to help turn things around, why have fun now when the world needs you.
The truth is that, there is definitely no time to waste. It does not matter if you are a teenager or you are twenty one, you can still make an impact on your generation, you can still innovate or invent that problem solving technological device, you can still establish that foundation that will help cater for a particular session of the people, you can still pay up the financial debts of your country, you can still help solve that problem that is making people to have sleepless nights, you can still start something now because you never can tell when your own trumpet will sound. Stop procrastinating about what you intend to do, stop postponing actions that you can take now simply because you think that there is still time, stop counting your life according to the 24hours per day time frame, because your life might not complete the 24hours time frame (it's not my prayer for us not to grow old, but that's just life). I work like a workaholic, infact, i am not a fan of the "one thing at a time" principle because i have a lot of ideas on my sleeve and i don't want to leave this world without accomplishing all of of them. I want to die empty (empty of all my potentials) notwithstanding the age or time.
If the world does not miss you when you die then you were of no importance to it. Let the world miss you no matter how old you are, let your community miss you for impacting their lives and environment phyically, let your family and loved ones find it difficult to fill up the vacuum in their lives as a result of your absence, let your nation have a taste of what you are made of no matter your age because there is definitely no time to waste. Life is about impact, you were not just created to occupy space on the earth, there is a reason for your existence. Discover it, no matter your age because there is No Time.

TO INDUSTRIALIZE OR TO ENTREPRENEURIALIZE

"Industrialization will help reduce unemployment but definitely not poverty"
While listening to a discussion by some people at a barbing salon, i heard them argue about the inability of the government to build factories everywhere in the Nigeria and also the inability of the government to attract foreign companies into the country to build factories that will lead to massive employment of the people. Some of them claim that through factories, the rate of unemployment among the youths in particular will reduce thereby reducing the crime rate in the country. As i was listening to their discussions and suggestions, i began to think in my mind "is industrialization really the key to poverty and unemployment in Africa?" I have always had this mentality that despite the fact that industrialization is one great way of reducing unemployment, entrepreneurship is the best way out of poverty.
Apart from the benefits of industrialization, i see industrialization as a form of modern slavery. I see it as an avenue which the so called "world powers" uses to exploit the so called "underdeveloped or developing" countries. Most of these foreign owned companies makes use of the resources of these third world countries to produce different products and end up exporting these products to their own countries to better the lives of their people. Industrialization is more beneficial to able bodied men and women unlike entrepreneurship where even a physically challenged can become a successful entrepreneur.
Some years ago, my younger siblings decided to work and earn money for themselves. They ended up working in a factory where they would leave home by 7am and close from work by 7pm. As if that was not enough, they stopped working before the end of the month because the factory work was so tedious that one of them got injured in his fingers that nearly disfigured him.
In my point of view, industrialization will help reduce unemployment but definitely not poverty. This doesn't mean that entrepreneurs do not establish factories, it simply means that entrepreneurs make more use of their minds unlike industrialization that requires the physical strength. Africans need to develop more of the mind abilities and less on the physical strength. With this, more millionaires and billionaires will be made unlike industrialization where one man will own a very large factory and employ thousands of workers that might never be rich if they continue as employees.
